FCI Allenwood (medium-security)
Federal Correctional Institution, Allenwood Medium (FCI Allenwood Medium) is a medium-security federal prison for men in White Deer, Pennsylvania, part of the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) Allenwood in Union County. It opened in 1992 alongside the complex's low-security and high-security institutions.[1]
Overview
FCC Allenwood is one of the few Bureau of Prisons complexes spanning the full male security spectrum on a single campus: FCI Allenwood Low, FCI Allenwood Medium, and USP Allenwood. The Medium sits between the two, housing men whose security-point scores and offense histories place them above camp or low-security eligibility but below penitentiary-level custody.[1] Housing at a medium-security FCI is cell-based rather than dormitory-style, with a more controlled and structured daily movement schedule than the adjacent Low.
As of 2026, the facility holds roughly 1,054 male inmates.[1] Like the rest of the complex, it offers work assignments, education and vocational programming, and the Residential Drug Abuse Program for eligible inmates.
Notable Inmates
Ronald Pelton, a former National Security Agency intelligence analyst convicted in 1986 of selling classified signals-intelligence secrets to the Soviet Union, including details that compromised Operation Ivy Bells, served part of his sentence at FCI Allenwood Medium before his release on November 24, 2015. Pelton died in 2022.[2]
The names above reflect public reporting and court records. The Bureau does not publicize current housing assignments, and an inmate's facility can change without notice.
Location and Visitation
FCI Allenwood Medium's mailing address is P.O. Box 2000, White Deer, PA 17887, on the same Union County campus as the rest of the Allenwood complex, roughly 75 miles north of Harrisburg.[1] Before traveling, check the institution's official page for current visiting days, hours, and restrictions: Official BOP Page.
