Project:Privacy policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Prisonpedia collects, stores, and uses information from people who visit the site or create an account. The service functions in a way similar to other public knowledge projects where users edit pages, submit content, and participate in discussions.
Information We Collect
You can browse most pages without creating an account. If you choose to register, you provide a username, a password, and an email address. We store that information so you can log in and manage your contributions.
When you edit any page, publish a comment, or take any action on the site, we store the text you submit along with your username and the time of the change. If you edit without logging in, the change is linked to your IP address.
We store IP addresses for security, abuse prevention, and quality control. This includes IP addresses linked to user accounts, edits, logins, failed logins, and any request that reaches our servers. We store user agent strings and basic device information for the same reasons.
We track standard server data such as pages viewed, visit time, referral sources, and general traffic patterns. This data helps maintain site performance and detect harmful activity.
Cookies
Prisonpedia uses cookies for session management. This allows the site to keep you logged in and maintain your preferences. You can block cookies through your browser, but doing so limits some features.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information you provide to operate the site, maintain accurate edit histories, prevent vandalism, enforce site rules, and support community moderation. We also use it to fix problems, measure performance, and keep the site secure.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not share your information with advertisers or data brokers.
Public Information
Most contribution activity on Prisonpedia is public. This includes your contributions, edits, discussions, and any profile information you choose to share. Your username is tied to your contribution history. If you edit without an account, your IP address appears in the public edit log.
Account Deletion and Changes
You can request deletion of your account. We can remove your email address and password from our systems. We cannot remove your past contributions from the public record, because they form part of the community history. We can rename your account upon request, which changes your public username on past edits.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect the site from unauthorized access. No online system is perfect. You should choose a strong password and avoid reusing passwords from other services.
Third Party Services
We use standard hosting and analytics providers to operate the site. These services receive limited technical information such as IP addresses and browser details as part of normal server operations. They do not receive user account data such as email addresses or passwords.
Children’s Privacy
Prisonpedia does not target users under the age of 13. If you believe we have collected information from a minor, contact us at [email protected] and we will take appropriate action.
Changes to This Policy
We update this policy when the site adds features or when laws change. The latest version is always available on this page.
Contact
If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact the site administrators through [email protected] e-mail address.
