Project:About
Prisonpedia gives you clear information about the federal prison system. The goal is simple. You should have accurate details before you walk into a process that affects your life and family. Many people search for answers at the start and find old forums, secondhand stories, or official language that feels hard to use. We built this site to fill that gap.
The project comes from lived experience, directly from people who spent time in federal custody. Our contributors dealt with the same questions our readers have, faced the same fears, and dealt with the confusion that comes with this process. They left the system knowing what information would have helped them at the start. Their notes sit at the core of this site.
Prisonpedia seeks to offer practical and actionable guidance without bias. We edit and review each page with people who have direct experience. We also review public records, policy documents, and verified reports. When something varies by location, we say so. When something is unclear, we note that too. You should know what is solid and what depends on staff, region, or timing.
Prisonpedia is not legal advice. You should speak with an attorney for any legal question about your case, sentencing, or rights. We also have no formal link to the Federal Bureau of Prisons or any government agency other than the time that we spent in custody. This site exists to help you prepare, not to replace official guidance or legal support.
People visit Prisonpedia at hard moments in their lives. Some face sentencing. Some prepare to surrender. Some support a loved one. The information here gives you a baseline. It reduces stress and gives you a sense of what to expect. The project grows with the community. Former residents contribute updates. Families share notes. Advocates confirm changes in policy and procedure.
As the system shifts, we adjust the content. You can share your own experience to help others who are where you once stood.
Prisonpedia exists so you have clear information at the moment you need it most.
