FCI Petersburg (low-security)
Federal Correctional Institution, Petersburg Low (FCI Petersburg Low) is the low-security institution at the Federal Correctional Complex near Petersburg, Virginia, which also includes a medium-security FCI and a satellite camp. On July 1, 2026, the Bureau of Prisons announced that the Low will permanently close as part of a six-facility consolidation the agency attributed to extreme staffing shortages and a maintenance backlog exceeding $4 billion.[1][2]
The facility
The Petersburg Low is a dormitory-style low-security institution serving the mid-Atlantic region, with education, vocational, and work programming typical of the low-security tier.
The closure
Under the closure plan, staff assigned to the Low will transfer to the complex's other units rather than face layoffs, and the population will be redesignated to other facilities, with the Bureau prioritizing proximity to anticipated release locations.[2] This page will be retitled and preserved as a historical record once the closure is complete.
