FCI Beaumont (low-security)
Federal Correctional Institution, Beaumont Low (FCI Beaumont Low) is the low-security institution at the Federal Correctional Complex in Beaumont, Texas, one of the largest federal complexes in the country, which also includes a medium-security FCI, a high-security penitentiary, and a minimum-security camp. On July 1, 2026, the Bureau of Prisons announced that the Low will permanently close as part of a six-facility consolidation driven by extreme staffing shortages and a systemwide maintenance backlog of more than $4 billion.[1][2]
The facility
The Beaumont Low is a dormitory-style low-security institution within the sprawling FCC Beaumont reservation in southeast Texas. Like other lows, it houses men with limited criminal history or those stepping down from higher custody, with a program slate that includes education, vocational training, and work assignments.
The closure
Under the closure plan, staff assigned to the Low will be transferred to the complex's other institutions rather than laid off, and its population will be redesignated to other facilities, with the Bureau saying placements will prioritize keeping people close to their anticipated release locations.[2][3] This page will be retitled and preserved as a historical record once the closure is complete.
