Category:Pardoned

From Prisonpedia

Pardoned individuals are those who have received a presidential pardon for federal offenses. A pardon is an act of executive clemency that forgives a person for their crime and restores certain civil rights that may have been lost due to conviction.

This category includes profiles of individuals who have been pardoned by U.S. Presidents after being convicted of federal crimes.

Presidential Pardon Power

The U.S. Constitution grants the President broad authority to "grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment." This power is virtually unlimited for federal offenses and cannot be overturned by Congress or the courts.

Effects of a Pardon

A presidential pardon:

  • Forgives the crime and ends any remaining sentence or supervised release
  • Restores civil rights such as voting and jury service
  • Does NOT expunge the conviction from the person's record
  • Does NOT restore professional licenses automatically
  • Does NOT affect state criminal charges (only federal offenses)

Types of Executive Clemency

  • Full Pardon - Complete forgiveness of the offense
  • Commutation - Reduction of sentence, but conviction remains
  • Remission of Fine - Forgiveness of financial penalties
  • Reprieve - Temporary postponement of punishment
