Notes from Alumni
- One former resident described the environment bluntly: "There was a lot of stabbing, cops beating inmates up in the SHU, racism, corruption and these programs they talk about they don't really have... there's no such thing as rehabilitation in the federal prison."
- A DC inspection report found two-thirds of survey respondents were unsatisfied with their prison job, and three-quarters were unsatisfied with vocational training.
- In 2025, a former lieutenant pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate inmates' civil rights, revealing a "staff assault day" where newly released inmates were targeted for beatings.
- Despite this, a November 2025 visit noted: "The professionalism and cooperation I witnessed from staff... encouraged me. USP Big Sandy demonstrated that even within a high-security environment, a culture of hope and progress can take root."
- The camp houses approximately 40 inmates in dormitory housing.
