Robert Sylvester Kelly (born January 8, 1967), known professionally as R. Kelly, is an American singer-songwriter and convicted sex offender serving a combined federal sentence for racketeering, sex trafficking, and production of child sexual abuse material.[1] In 2022, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison following his conviction in New York on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. In 2023, he received an additional 20-year sentence in Chicago for child pornography and enticement of minors, with most of that sentence running concurrently. Kelly, who sold over 75 million records worldwide and was considered one of the most successful R&B artists of the 1990s and 2000s, is expected to remain incarcerated until December 2045.[2]
Summary
R. Kellys conviction represented the culmination of decades of allegations, investigations, and cultural reckoning. For more than 25 years, Kelly faced accusations of sexual abuse, manipulation, and exploitation of girls and young women—allegations that were documented in court filings, news reports, and the 2019 documentary series "Surviving R. Kelly." Despite the persistent allegations, Kelly continued to produce hit records and perform for large audiences until his arrest in 2019.
Prosecutors proved that Kelly used his fame, money, and a network of associates to recruit and groom underage girls and young women for sexual exploitation. Victims testified that Kelly subjected them to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, controlled their movements, and punished them for violating his arbitrary rules.[3]
Background
Robert Kelly was born on January 8, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois. He rose to fame in the early 1990s and became one of the best-selling music artists of all time, known for songs including "I Believe I Can Fly," "Ignition (Remix)," and the "Trapped in the Closet" series. He won three Grammy Awards and was credited with shaping the sound of contemporary R&B.
Allegations against Kelly date back to the 1990s, including a 1994 marriage to 15-year-old singer Aaliyah (Kelly was 27), which was annulled after her family discovered it.
Criminal Cases
New York Trial
In September 2021, Kelly was convicted in Brooklyn federal court on one count of racketeering and eight counts of violations of the Mann Act (sex trafficking). Prosecutors proved he used his fame and a network of associates to lure and sexually exploit women and girls over decades. On June 29, 2022, he was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.[2]
Chicago Trial
In September 2022, Kelly was convicted in Chicago federal court on charges including production of child sexual abuse material, enticement of minors, and obstruction of justice related to his 2008 state trial. In February 2023, he was sentenced to 20 years, with most of the time running concurrently with his New York sentence.[4]
Appeals
On February 12, 2025, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Kellys racketeering and sex trafficking convictions and 30-year sentence, rejecting arguments that trial evidence was inadequate, that four jurors were biased, and that the racketeering charge was improper. The Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in June 2025.[1]
Prison Status
Kelly is serving his sentence at FCI Butner Medium in North Carolina. His projected release date is December 21, 2045, when he will be nearly 79 years old.
In June 2025, Kellys attorneys sought his release to home confinement, claiming his life was in danger from prison officials. They alleged that officials plotted to murder him and that he was hospitalized after an overdose of medication administered by prison staff. A federal judge denied the motion, and prosecutors called the claims "repugnant."[5]
